Residential railings

This custom residential railing in Seattle was designed and fabricated by Joe Wilkinson as both a safety feature and a defining visual element of the home’s exterior. Constructed from welded steel and finished with a vibrant, high-gloss powder coat, the railing introduces a bold, contemporary contrast to the surrounding wood and siding.

The design follows the natural descent of the stair, with clean horizontal lines that subtly shift to accommodate the change in elevation. These continuous lines create a sense of movement and cohesion, guiding the eye while reinforcing the structure’s stability. Thoughtful attention to proportion, spacing, and joinery ensures durability and code compliance, while elevating the railing beyond a purely functional element.

By combining precision fabrication with a strong visual identity, Wilkinson transforms a standard residential feature into an integrated architectural gesture—one that enhances both the experience of movement through the space and the overall character of the home.

This simple, asymmetrical railing was designed and fabricated by Joe Wilkinson for a residential entry in Seattle. Surrounding three steps up to the front door, the welded steel structure is finished in a dark brown bronze, offering a subtle, understated presence.

The asymmetrical composition responds directly to the architecture of the entryway, balancing function and form while maintaining a clean, minimal profile.
